Camaraderie and sharing history and experiences with other Coast Guard Aviators is an important part of the Pterodactyls.  Each year we host a gathering, or "roost".  Previous roosts have been held in:

Roost 2007 was held in Washington D.C.
Roost 2008 is scheduled for 11-14 Sept in Astoria, Oregon

Recent Pterodactyl Accomplishments

Actively  Promoted Coast Guard Aviation History (1993-2005)

  • Pterodactyls contributed approximately $28,000 insupport of the ICARUS monument.
  • Donated over $20,000 to the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation Foundation
  • Oversaw numerous expansions, additions and improvements to Coast Guard Exhibit at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, including:
    • HO-4S helo added as inside exhibit

    • HH-52A helo added as inside exhibit

    • HH-3F helo added as outside exhibit

    • RD-4 Seaplane added as inside exhibit

    • Ancient Albatross trophy on exhibit

    • Enlisted Ancient Albatross trophy on exhibit

    • New trophy case for models

    • Air Station patch display (over 100 patches)

  • Published our own book, History of Coast Guard Aviation (1916 - 1986)

  • Assisted in the publishing  of several other books including:

    • Wonderful Flying Machines (Tom Beard)

    • Grumman Albatross (Wayne Mutza) 

    • HH-52 History (Lennart Lundh)

    • USCG Aviation (Robert Dorr)

    • The Coast Guard (Tom Beard

  • Expanded and improved the Coast Guard Aviation Hall of Fame Exhibit at Coast Guard Aviation Training Center, Mobile

  • Provided leadership and support to Elizabeth City complex in fundraising and historical research for the Coast Guard Aviation Memorial Wall.  Donated $2,000 and assigned Capt. S. Storm as corporate and membership fundraising expert.

Support of Active Duty Coast Guard Forces

  • Coordinat and fund Ancient Albatross Ceremonies

  • Established the CAPT Marion "Gus" Shrode Flight Safety Officer Award (1998)

  • Established the CDR  Elmer Stone Fixed Wing Rescue Award (2000)

  • Established the CAPT Frank Erickson Rotary Wing Rescue Award (2000)

  • Established the Aviation Maintenance Award (2003)

  • Sponsored and revitalized the Cadet Aviation Club at the Coast Guard Academy

    • Donated $6,000 and will continue annual support

Your identity, pilot and aircrew designators, aircraft flown, awards and
more can be preserved and accessed by loved ones and others visiting
